Photography originates as a medium that represents reality as is, but today it takes on new functions. Artists like Edward Weston and Minor White prove that it is possible, through technical expedients and, most of all, an unusual view of things, to represent reality adding a meaning beyond the obvious, transforming even the most common objects in abstract entities. Reality already carries an abstract component and only those who know how to take notice and decontextualise it are able to narrate it. The question seems to be: can photography be considered abstract when it depicts existing and material objects?
